Interview with the Senior US soldier in the Mekong Delta who told me that the war couldn’t be won – heresy at the time from the lips of such a senior commander, but so clearly the truth. The heartbreak is that it cost so many more lives for Nixon and Kissinger to swallow their pride and concede defeat. I was working for the Sunday Times Magazine in Vietnam but filed this story and a couple more from the road to another publication. And got into trouble for it, understandably.
