Martha Gellhorn was one of the great reporters and journalists of her age from the Spanish Civil War to Vietnam (where she was the only reporter ever to be banned from entering) and after. She was a novelist, like her one-time husband, Ernest Hemingway which was partly why she married him, she told me: to learn how to write. In fact Hemingway learned a lot from her. She was a passionate believer in outing humbug and ‘official drivel’ She was also a friend of mine; and she was the best company in the world. I wrote this after Martha, having lost her ability to read, committed suicide with an astronaut’s get-out pill, having left little notes and gifts for her friends around her apartment.
