A haunting place inhabited only by tribes of cats; it was abandoned in a day when the water supply was choked off. British soldiers were under siege here for some time in the 19th century. Outside were the fearsome, aggressive Danakil, the subject of Kipling’s poem; Fuzzy Wuzzy; It was surreal to wander around empty houses made of coral, to open drawers and find abandoned artefacts and letters from so long before.
