Tonio Trzebinski, 42 years, Kenyan artist, who I had known as a child, was shot dead outside his girlfriend’s house outside Nairobi. I went to investigate what was inevitably seen as some remake of the White Mischief story – white people behaving badly on the Equator. The murder, the motive, the assailant, were truly unfathomable; the circumstances were bizarre and it provided a vivid update of the lives of the remaining whites for many of whom the former colony was still the playground that formed the backdrop to the White Mischief story.
